Rusty old streamer

The seventh of January and the thermometer shows +8 degrees Celsius. It has been an incredibly warm winter so far here in the southern parts of Norway where I live. The ice sealed the lakes in early November, but with the mild temperatures from mid-November and rain from the south, the ice has begun to melt again. It's been three months since the last fishing trip and since the weather forecast says that the wind will turn from south to north this weekend, it was time for the first fishing trip this year- before the cold returns.

So I packed the car with the Dickerson mod 7613  a 7' 6" 5wt taper that I like to use when I'm fishing for sea trout. An while the coffee water  are cooking and waders are on I realise that my fly box are missing and probably laying on the kitchen table. Luckily I found this old and forgotten streamer in the back of the car trunk , almost falling apart and the body tinsel that should be gold where brown and rusty. But what the he....just nice to be out fishing again and feel the air from the sea.

It turned out that the fish did not care anything about that the streamer was about to fall apart. Got two smaller sea trout but lost five fish ... some larger, likely because of the rusty hook. Nice with the first fish this year anyway.

  1. Jan, I love this post.
Did you tie the streamer, and does it have a name? I tie streamers and they are known only to me, but that's OK.
I would like your permission to use the two photos of the streamer in my blog. I would give you credit for them as well as a link to your blog.
You are a true craftsman, an artist in bamboo.
    Love the Pflueger.

  2. Brk Trt thanks.
Yes I tied the streamer some years ago when I were fishing a lot in the sea outside Oslo.
Great for catching sea trout. The streamer I used last day looks kind of shabby, but the colours
were the right ones for that day... I think, because the water were a little coloured. The fish liked it. Not sure about the name...just liked the colours.
Feel free to use the pictures.

  3. Great story! Love the sea-trout. Hey when spring rolls around, dig around your trunk for a nice dry fly! Haha

  4. Nice sea trout! Funny I just got a textmessage that a friend of mine caugt a 3+ lb sea trout on a pink shrimp imitation. He lives in the south of Sweden so fly fishing season is usually much longer there than here up north.

      Thanks.
3+ Ib thats nice. Many small rivers that flow into the sea where I live, which make sure it is a nice population of sea trout. Can only hope the ice stays away.
