Chopsticks and Singel malt

When you are going to heat treat the bamboo there are different ways to do it.
You can just take the cane sections as they are, I like to split them in to chopsticks
and heat treat them in the kitchen oven for 10 minutes at 360 degrees.
A slight colour change and a lovely smell of cane cooking and they are done.

Chopsticks ready for baking in the oven.

Bamboo sticks and canerod.

After the job is done it's nice with a reward.

I store the bamboo in an airtight box, just to avoid moisture re entry.

  1. Another great post. I never would have known you could bake them in your home oven! Just curious how many of those chopsticks will you use to create one rod?? Also if you were to make a 6'6" fly rod how long do you make each section of chopsticks?? Great photos. Thanks for sharing. A well deserved reward too :) Tight Lines.

p.s. Where does someone get or order the actual bamboo from?
    Thanks for your time.

  2. Thanks.
For the 7' long rod that I'm building I will need somewhere around 60 sticks. Take half the rod length and add another 2 inches leeway on each end of the strip, that gives you a little margin for error in planing and gluing the strips.
To get the bamboo try http://www.goldenwitch.com/ or try to find another bamboo builder nearby where you live, maybe he will sell you a culm.
